On October 24th, a delegation from the Counsellor’s Office of the State Council of China (COSC, 国务院参事室)visited the Institute of Asian Research (IAR) at UBC to discuss possible research collaborations between the two units.
The delegation was headed by Mr. Zhao Bing, Vice Chairman of COSC. Mr. Zhao was joined by Mr. Liu Yanhua, Counsellor of COSC and former Vice Minister of Technology. IAR Associate Director, Dr. Brian Job, and Dr. Paul Evans, professor of political science, and a group of Ph.D candidates met the delegation. It was agreed that IAR and COSC would explore to establish research partnerships in areas of green economy, global governance and regional security.
Reporting to the State Council of China, the COSC serves as an advisory and consulting unit for Chinese leaders on major issues concerning the development of the country. Its counsellors are appointed by the Premier. UBC honorary degree recipient Dr. Justin Yifu Lin is one of the current 41 counsellors of COSC.
